NOS PyeongChang Live 2018
NOS PyeongChang Live 2018 was part of the assignment for the set designs specifically created for the NOS in 2018. NOS showcased the performances of the best Dutch sports athletes in the popular live sportprogram. The broadcast coverage of the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 captured millions of Dutch viewers. Due to the enormous popularity it was a great honor to create a set design for the Olympic events, because was is also a great way to promote my work. The Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 were held in South Korea. Because of the time difference, the NOS started the live broadcasts in the middle of the night. About half an hour before the skating or short track started in PyeonChang, NOS switched live to the Gangneung Oval or to the Geyongpo Ice Hall.
‘The challenge is transforming the artistic concept into a multi-functional set.‘
It requires a multidisciplinary approach, effort and experience to develop a successful and feasible set design for a live broadcast on location. The challenge was transforming the artistic concept into a multi-functional set that can be used in no time for various presentations. I collaborated closely with the television director and the producer in order to make sure that the design is consistent with the camera settings and any other technical needs that the production may call for.
Assignment for the set design
The assignment for the set design consisted of 2 presentation sets; an interview desk with monitor on a tripod and a presentation desk. In addition, the NOS indicated that the look&feel of the design should follow the guidelines of the Olympic event. The set design I provided included not only the color choices and the materials, but also the suggested ideas for construction and the artwork conform the request by client.
Yellowspot supplied RGB LED lighting for both presentation sets. The application was both decorative and indirect.
