The first edition HOLLAND INTERNATIONAL BLUES FESTIVAL was strategically launched in Grolloo as a test case. Due the huge success the event organisator Mojo concerts expanded the festival area and the music tent for the following editions. The prediction is that this growing trend will likely continue even after 2019 as long as the major artists and the blues fans continue to embrace the festival.
‘The increase in competition requires a clear distinctive event design’
The live music industry is evolving faster than ever. Almost 840 festivals are entertaining about 23.3 million people in the Netherlands alone. The increase in competition requires a clear positioning of an event and a clear distinctive character in relation to other organizations.
Event Design My assignment was to develop an authentic event design for the two-day blues festival. The event design consisted of the decoration of the main stage, the entrance and the food & drink area. Initially the focus was on designing an eye-catching entrance build from two blues guitar players welcoming the festivalgoers. In addition, we paid a close attention to the decoration of the wooden doors and the roof including the gallery of honor with the famous blues artists.
The assignment for the artwork was not only to create the artwork but also deliver ready-to-print files for various towers, the fences and the food tents. After the exploration of the festival terrain I started intuitively paint with watercolors. By starting out with the blue tints, then slowly bringing in touches of green to achieve the desired impression of the blues festival. After coloring all the elements, I scanned the original illustrations and converted them into an artwork.
